Could I be alcohol dependent?

CALL US if you want to discuss any aspect of your drinking in total confidence. Our telephone number is free of charge and will not show up on your phone bill.

  • Is drinking making your home life unhappy?
  • Do you drink because you are shy with other people?
  • Is drinking affecting your reputation?
  • Have you ever felt remorse after drinking?
  • Have you been experiencing financial difficulties as a result of drinking?
  • Do you seek other alcohol dependent people as drinking companions?
  • Does your drinking make you careless of your family’s welfare?
  • Has your ambition decreased since drinking?
  • Do you crave a drink at a definite time of day?
  • Do you want a drink the next morning?
  • Does drinking cause you difficulty in sleeping?
  • Has your efficiency decreased since drinking?
  • Is drinking jeopardising your job or business?
  • Do you drink to escape from worries or trouble?
  • Do you drink alone?
  • Have you had a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking?
  • Has your GP ever treated you for drinking?
  • Do you drink to build up your self confidence?
  • Have you ever been to a hospital or institution on account of drinking?

Answering “Yes” to any one of these questions is a warning sign. If you answered “Yes” to any two questions, you may be alcohol dependent.

Do I have a drinking problem?

The effects of drinking alcohol build up in the body. Starting at the top of this list and working down, ask yourself if you recognise any of these issues.

If you have more than three or four of them at the same time, then you might want to think about whether this is something you need to address.

SDAC recommend that medical or alcohol specialist advice and support should be sought in all situations where alcohol dependence is likely.

WARNING: Stopping drinking suddenly can put your health at serious risk.
