The use of ‘Legal Highs’, now known as new psychoactive substances (NPS), is a growing problem across the UK. New and novel chemicals are being marketed through websites on a weekly basis with very little knowledge of the short term dangers or consequences of taking these drugs.

Psychoactive substances (NPS) – also called ‘Legal Highs’

From 26th May 2016, it will be illegal to supply or sell NPS and a sentence up to 7 years in prison comes into force. In addition it will also be an offence to produce, import or export NPS. The new law will capture any substance intended for human consumption that is capable of producing a psychoactive effect excluding substances, such as alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, caffeine and medical products. The new law will be enforced by police, trading standards officers, Border Force and the National Crime Agency.
